Job Goal:  To assist the teacher in the supervision and instruction of special education students; performing classroom clerical tasks; and assisting students by meeting special health care needs and developing students’ daily living and behavioral skills

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. High school diploma or GED certificate.
  2. Demonstrated aptitude for work to be performed.
  3. Hold an associate's degree or higher in any subject from a GaPSC-accepted accredited institution; or
  4. Have completed two (2) years of college coursework (60 semester hours) above the remedial level with a grade of "C" or better at a GaPSC-accepted accredited institution or
  5. Passed the GACE Paraprofessional Assessment.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Physical presence on site. Prompt and regular attendance.
• Assist in the implementation of Individual Education Plans for the students and monitor their progress.
• Works with other professionals, such as teacher, speech therapist, social worker, occupational and physical therapists.
• Assist in the preparation and display of student work.
• Accompanies groups on field trips under the supervision of the teacher when such trips are authorized for educational purposes.
• Supports students with emotional or behavior concerns and assist them in developing appropriate social skills.
• Supervise students in halls and playgrounds and other unstructured areas as assigned by the teacher
• Help maintain a positive classroom environment
• Monitor student for health problems if assigned
• Maintains confidentially
• Assists with instruction for assigned students in support of, and under the direction of, the teacher.
• Prepares activities under the guidance of the Classroom Teacher including preparation of bulletin boards, displays, exhibits, and related classroom and school displays.
• Participates in in-service training programs.
• Assists Classroom Teacher with non-instructional duties such as: breakfast/snack/lunch time, bathroom, and/or clothing routines, and procedures to ensure the supervision and safety of students.
• Assists individuals and/or small groups of students in various educational settings including the media center, computer lab, and community-based instructional settings.
• Assists with clerical duties under the direction of the Classroom Teacher or Principal.
• Assists with instruction in the physical education program as necessary.
• Assists students in feeding, toileting, diapering, and other daily care routines as necessary.

 

Physical Requirements:
Able to perform routine physical activities that are required to fulfill job responsibilities including:
Spends the majority of the day standing and/or sitting in the classroom. Frequent walking, standing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, lifting of students, equipment and/or material may be required.
Medium Work: Exerting 25 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently and/or lift up

Able to perform routine physical activities that are required to fulfill job responsibilities including:

Evaluation:

Performance of this job will be evaluated annually by the principal in accordance with the provisions of the Board’s policy on classified evaluation.
